Environmental Impact

There is a great need for Ecological Design. The degredadition of environments and habitats has been catastrophic to endangered species. We are currently within the sixth mass extinction of the history of the planet and it is occuring, according to the fossil record, 1000 times faster than ever before. Habitat loss and pollution are two of the major contributors to this loss of species.

By creating micro-ecosystems on residential or commercial sites, a patchwork will begin to develop that can mitigate habitat loss and pollution. If fertilizers, pesticides, and air pollutants are caught and sequestered by plants before they can enter the surrounding environment, this form of non-point source pollution can be greatly reduced if not eliminated.

With increased habitat, species diversity will increase, and greater buffer capacity will be realized. All of these services and benefits are residual and do not cost extra money to maintain. An ecological design also will cost less over the long term to maintain due to the competition of so many different species.
